News-ish A Bore-ish

So Friday I cleared my schedule just so I could get home on time to catch the new MTV Base show called News-ish which is a roundtable discussion of what the elites of the South African entertainment industry have been getting up to.

The one thing that instilled hype in me about of this show was the presence of Moshe Ndiki and Fareida Metsileng who are YouTube superstars and are super hilarious. Moshe is the guy that post videos of his encounters with his male romantic partners and some of his family, Farieda is the chick who curved instant fame from the Weh Deh Guareezy video

The show is a great  concept from MTV Base but it fell flat Friday and did not live up to its hype, the show had all the potential in the world to be a success simply because in SA we don’t have a roundtable discussion show on celebville happenings. We simply have update shows like the 30 minute long V-Entertainment on Vuzu.tv and BET’s BET Buzz which are not enough. As fans we are in hunger of other people’s opinions on what’s happening so for instance we can decide if we’re #TeamBonang or #TeamZinhle or #TeamSuperMega. The genius part of this show is that they at least cast the funny Moshe and Farieda. on her side Farieda was killing it to the point where I believed she could actually handle the show all alone but we would’ve been much happier if she was a little closer to the head of the table as the most shots fired were by her. Moshe also held his own but we think the dis-coordination of the show threw him off a little bit.

What if we told you that the show actually has 6 cast members and yet we only spoke of 2????

That’s how forgettable they were, we don’t know who the 2 guys were and we don’t know who the chick that sat at the head of the table is but she’s a good host and Nina Hastie was rather placed in an unfortunate position cause we know she can be super funny. Our advice to MTV Base would be to keep the head of the table, move Farieda and Moshe up so they can receive as much screen time and sadly get rid of the two gents. That right there is a recipe for a bomb ass show

#SAMA22 A Blaze

The weekend came and went and what a pleasant experience it was. This past Saturday the SAMAs awarded the most deserving artists in the land and we have no complaints regarding the winnings.

Let’s begin with the hosts, Thando Thabethe and Somizi Mhlongo did an amazing job all through the night. While Somizi was serving jokes upon jokes Thando was on a fashion slayage voyage.
The performances were also top notch with acts like Khuli Chana, Riky Rick and Karlien van Jaarsveld who took to stage to help Nathi belt out his beloved song Nomvula. We’re disappointed though that Ricky didn’t bag anything for the night but let’s discuss our predictions

Ø  Our first prediction was on the  Album of the Year category and here we were torn between Nathi and Black Coffee who by the way ended up taking the award which was accepted on by his mother on his behalf cause he’s out there in the world representing Mzansi

Ø  Zonke took the ward for Female Artist of the Year and that took us all by surprised because we were pretty convinced that the award had Karen Zoid’s name on it. We were surprised further that the usual suspect Zahara also didn’t match up and the reigning queen of rap Fifi Cooper also fell short
Ø  Our happiest moment of the night was when Nathi took the New Comer of the Year gong which we predicted he would. This guy deserves everything that’s coming his way

Ø  Though we said the gong for Best Rap Album would be between Ricky Rick and Emtee, we knew that Emtee would inevitably take it but we were just hoping that Boss Zonke would be crowned

Ø  This was the most obvious category of all and we predicted it correctly and indeed Black Coffee took it. Better luck Mobi Dixon

Ø  Just when we thought Shumaya was done and dusted it resurfaces and snatched the Best Collaboration award from new kids Shekinah and Kyle. Also better luck next time guys.

For next year we're crossing our fingers and evrything crossable that Nasty C wins as much awards as he deserves.

Riky Rick hangs out with AKA.

We don't know what you guys think, but we were left surprised when aka posted a picture of him, Da Les and Riky Rick sitting around a table having drinks. Its no secret that Boss Zonke is Cassper's close friend, which is why we found this pic surprising because Aka is Cassper's biggest rival. Aka even said in his diss track that Riky was once caught in the middle of his beef with Cassper and he refused to collaborate. One of the Instagram users even commented and said: "uBozz Zonke usehlala noAKA manje?"  Which basically means "Does Riky Rick hang out with AKA now?" We hope Cassper won't take it personal.

We don't know what's up, tell us what you think. Reach us on Twitter @Selandel

Here Comes The SAMAs

Image result for SAMA22

Today is Thursday and as promised the #SAMA22 people have given us a few things to be excited about towards the night of glory the 4th of June.

It’s not really an award ceremony if your girl B isn’t in it. SAMA figured that much and then gave Bonang Matheba the red carpet duties for the night along with the SABC’s long reigning golden boy Lunga Tshabalala and because 3 is a party the Zaziwa host Pearl Modiadie will be joining the party.

You guys surely remember the Amstel Green Room where winners are interviewed right after their victory, last year that was Pearl Modiadie’s spot and this year the bold man himself Phat Joe and movie glory Khanyi Mbau will be holding it down this year.

There is a lot of hype around this year’s ceremony and it better live up to the hype and not take us all the way just to tease us. However the biggest people of the night besides the nominees and winners are not those I’ve just mentioned. Your hosts of the night are one of a kind. Somizi Mhlongo the renowned choreographer, Idols SA judge and quite recent reality TV star will be accompanied by the hella’ yellow and hella’ bootylicious Thando Thabethe to carry out the hosting duties on the main stage.

If you ask us the night in question has amazing potential to be like none other we’ve ever seen to date

Check Out AKA's dreamwork video.

Aka has finally dropped his long-awaited music video for his song Dreamwork featuring Yanga and it is quite dope. The video was shot in film style and was directed by Adriaan Louw. It's a story of youngsters who get caught up in the dangerous streets of Joburg. The concept behind the whole thing was to portray the gun violence and dishonesty of police that youngsters have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Check it out for yourself:

Enter Jesse Suntele

23-year old Jesse Suntele emerged as the newest and second winner of Top Africa after Altovise Lawrence however the competition wasn’t yet continental when Altovise won it was just amongst South Africans.

This year the competition was open for all Africans to participate and our Jesse came out tops. Jesse is no stranger on our screens, he has done multiple adverts such as the Sprite Sub-Zero Swim ad which is probably he’s most aired work.

The competition this year was tough and serious and we are even surprised that Jesse pulled through to the finale, not that we don’t think he’s good just that everybody else was also just as good. To snatch the prize Jesse had to battle fellow South African Shamilla Miller who was excellent in the completion from the get-go and the Kenyan native Alex Khainga who had an emotional journey on the show but his was the most pleasant growth to watch. We are very proud of these 3 and we can’t wait to see what they will do with the experience and the exposure

Top Actor Africa Wrap Up

It may be a little too late but here at Sel&EL we don’t work on a time frame and that’s exactly why we only going to do a roundup of Top Actor Africa which aired their final episode on 24 May.
First things first the finale consisted of the deserving top 3, Kenyan Alex and fellow South Africans Jesse and Shamilla. In the first episode we were introduced to the contestants. From South Africa they were:
  • ·         Jesse Suntele
  • ·         Shamilla Miller
  • ·         Ferrell Drew
  • ·         Marylyn Sekgapane
  • ·         Hendrik Lombard
  • ·         Sabelo Sibeko
  • ·         Simhle Plaatjies

From Nigeria were
  • ·         Tobechi Nneji
  • ·         Ifeanyi Dike
  • ·         Uriel Chukwu

Kenya had only 2 representatives:
  • ·         Lorreine Gakuo
  • ·         Alexander Khainga

From the first episode we made a judgement that Simhle was the one to watch out for and that the weakling was between Hendrik, Marylyn and Alex but in a strange turn of events Alex showed a hunger and amazing growth which saw him claim a spot in the top 3. Marylyn had a fair run and we have hope that we might see her again on South African TV screens. Hendrik was just horrible; though he had a certain drive to him he still has a lot to learn. Simhle just plain disappointed us coz we strongly believed that she would be amongst the top ranking contestants but she was the first casualty of elimination after she failed to portray a Xhosa woman which is strange.

Favourites from the first episode obviously were Shamilla who impressed in the first challenge, Tobechi who had a striking look of a beautiful and empowered woman and lorreine was amongst the first glance favourites though she was called out for not being present in the competition.

The show continued and we saw that Alex is a very involved and interested contestant and then he entered our good books. Sabelo dropped the ball along the way with his arrogant attitude which shadowed his potential. Ferrell was just boring; the guy has potential to be an actor but lacks variety. Who we were scared of from the jump is Ifeanyi who has starred in major Nigerian productions like Desperate Housewives: Africa.
